(Senior) Research Scientist Machine Learning for Sensing (80-100%)

We are looking for you to strengthen our Corporate Research team in Baden-Daettwil with your experience as R&D Scientist in the field of machine learning for sensing applications. With us, you will be responsible to set up concepts and demonstrators of technological solutions for internal and external customers. In your new role, you will be at the center of the efforts to develop digital solutions based on artificial intelligence for a large range of industrial applications - from process and factory automation to asset monitoring and diagnostics in power systems. Furthermore, you will engage with cross-functional teams inside and outside the company and work together on many aspects of sensor system development. You will contribute to the definition of the team research roadmap and to the management of the research projects. Does that sound like an exciting opportunity for you? Tasks:

  • Perform applied research and technology development in the field of industrial sensor systems and Internet of Things (IIoT) - with application to process automation, discrete manufacturing, energy transmission and distribution, smart cities, maritime transport
  • Work in R&D multidisciplinary project teams to develop novel, high-value sensing solutions - by applying your knowledge on signal processing from the concept definition phase to the experimental verification
  • Drive research activities, generate intellectual property, write scientific publications
  • Evaluate new technologies and conduct technical surveys, collaborate with researchers and engineers from ABB business units as well as from universities, support the development of new products

Requirements:

  • PhD university degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field; combined with professional experience is a plus
  • Signal processing and machine learning as main technical expertise
  • Experience in any of the following fields is considered as a strong plus: image processing and computer vision for industrial applications (e.g.: robotics, discrete manufacturing, logistics), sensor technologies such as 2D/3D cameras, LIDAR and RADAR, embedded software technologies
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages - e.g. C/C++, Python, Matlab
  • Initiative, motivation and creativity
  • Talent to communicate in a multidisciplinary, international environment and potential leadership skills
  • Fluency in English, willingness to learn German
