In this role as Head Legal Data, IP and Digital within the Group Legal Department of Zurich you support internal stakeholders from multiple functions of Zurich on all issues related to data, IP and digitalization. You support the business on its journey towards digitalization with state of the art, pragmatic and hands in legal advice, especially regarding privacy, to enable these projects in a compliant way. Next to the legal support of concrete projects, you advise the business in the daily operations on legal issues in connection with new technologies, especially regarding the use of data.

Your Role

As Head Legal Data, IP and Digital your main responsibilities will involve:

  • Management of a small team of legal professionals
  • Legal support of projects regarding the implementation of new privacy and data laws, e.g. revised Swiss Data Protection law; and legal support to safeguard the ongoing compliance with existing privacy and data laws, e.g. GDPR
  • Legal advice to the business in the day to day operations as well as in projects on all legal issues in connection with digitalization and new technologies (e.g. Internet of Things, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Platforms, Dynamic Pricing) with a focus on privacy, but also of other relevant law, especially competition and anti-trust law
  • Comprehensive advice on legal issues in connection with the use/processing of data, especially personal data, e.g. contractual restriction re the use of sourced data, adherence to the data protection principles, cross border data flows, etc.
  • Maintaining a framework of global group internal data processing agreements to safeguard the privacy compliance of group internal data flows on a global basis
  • Negotiating various agreements in connection with the new technologies, digitalization projects and data, e.g. collaboration agreements, SaaS agreements, NDAs, data processing agreements etc.
  • Maintain a set of contract templates in the relevant fields, especially re privacy
  • Next to the legal advice to internal business clients (see above) close interaction and alignment with the control functions at Corporate Center ((Information) Risk/Security, Audit, Compliance) and with the colleagues of Legal/Compliance in the Zurich Business Units globally, with a focus on Europe
  • Functional responsibility for the global trademark portfolio of the Zurich Group, incl. monitoring and enforcement of the brands globally; legal advice and support to Group Marketing in all related areas, e.g. agreements with marketing agencies and sponsoring agreements.

Your Skills and Experience

As a Head Legal Data, IP and Digital your skills and qualifications will ideally include:

  • Law degree and Bar exam, preferably from Switzerland
  • Post graduate degree in foreign jurisdiction and/or foreign working experience is an advantage
  • At least ten years of relevant experience in the areas of Data Protection and IT/new technologies, including (online) distribution of digital customer offerings/services and the associated legal topics (competition/anti-trust law, agency law etc.)
  • Solid know-how of trademark law
  • Interest in (new) technology and related legal environment and eagerness to deepen specialist know-how in mentioned areas
  • Experience in working on global or regional projects and in coordinating lawyers in other jurisdictions
  • Ability to manage ambiguity and work in a multi-stakeholder environment
  • Sound communication and negotiation skills as well as the ability to successfully and sustainably manage relationships with senior managers at a corporate center and multinational environment
  • Fluent written and spoken English and German skills; any other language is a plus.
