RiSE - Roche internship for Scientific Exchange - Investigating the circuit basis of a Rodent Working Memory Task

At Roche, we believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives. We are brave in both decision and action, we believe that good business means a better world.

The Neuroscience Disease and Translational Area (DTA) oversees the discovery, research and development of novel treatments for major brain disorders such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The RiSE program (Roche Internships for Scientific Exchange) offers the most talented postgraduate students the opportunity to improve their competencies and to gain valuable work experience with us.

You will join a rodent behaviour team within the Neuroscience DTA, located at the Roche Headquarter site in Basel, Switzerland. Our group uses cutting edge methodologies, including touchscreen tasks, to assess cognitive function in rodent models. We profile molecules for disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease, throughout the course of the drug discovery process. We seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD or MD student who will use chemogenetic tools to explore the circuit underpinnings of a rodent touchscreen working memory task.

During the internship your tasks will include:

  • Collaborating with a lab head who will be your mentor/supervisor
  • Conduct laboratory research and work together with a multidisciplinary team of scientists
  • Perform stereotaxic surgeries in rodents, allowing circuit specific control of neural activity during a touchscreen task of working memory
  • Train animals in behavioral tasks, and analyze and report data to the team
  • Work collaboratively to present and publish results of high scientific merit

Who you are:

You provide us with examples that prove your ability to cultivate collaborations with different partners. This also means that you continuously contrast your results with others and acknowledge the benefit of teamwork and communications. As an intern you will be a member of the Roche Interns Network that offers you chances to connect, have fun and get to know Basel, in the heart of Europe. This position offers the unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into discovery research at a leading pharmaceutical company. We expect outstanding motivation, creativity, analytical thinking and a strong commitment to productivity and working in a team environment.

Moreover you are/have:

  • Enrolled in a PhD or medical degree program in university with a focus on neuroscience or neuropharmacology
  • Expertise in techniques relevant to rodent behaviour and circuit level investigations in neuroscience, including experience in stereotaxic surgery and use of viral vectors
  • A solid understanding of neuroanatomy
  • Interested to gain more experience in neuroscience research in the pharmaceutical industry
  • FELASA certificate or equivalent is required
  • A dedicated attitude to solve problems, high level of team orientation as well as excellent organizational skills
  • Communication skills and proficiency in English

Information about application documents and start date:
