Roche Internship for Scientific Exchange (RiSE) - Genetics of Age-related Macular Degeneration (April, 8 months)

At Roche, we believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are confident in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world.

That is why we come to work each day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigour, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.

The Position

The Ophthalmology Translational Medicine Area oversees the translational research and development of novel treatments for severe ophthalmic diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic eye disease. The RiSE program (Roche Internships for Scientific Exchange) offers the most talented postgraduate students the opportunity to improve their competencies and to gain valuable work experience with us.

Our team located in Basel, Switzerland, is using state of the art genetics and data analysis to better understand diseases and support drug development efforts in Ophthalmology. One area of particular interest is role of genetics in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a major cause of vision loss in the elderly population. We are looking for someone passionate about analyzing large whole-genome sequencing datasets to better understand the biology underlying the genetic association of common and rare variants to AMD.

Several genetic studies have uncovered a strong influence of genetics in AMD. However, the biology underlying this genetic association is not well understood. Better understanding of this genetic association would be essential to design strategies for the discovery and development of new therapeutic drugs for treatment of AMD, with final aim of bringing meaningful improvement to the life of AMD patients. In the internship you will apply advanced analytical tools to investigate Roche’s large Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) database to answer relevant questions of AMD biology.

During our internship your tasks will include:

  • With help of expert scientists, write a detailed Analysis Plan for a genome-wide analysis of Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) and/or Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) databases
  • Be responsible for data preparation and management of the clinical and the WES and/or WGS databases
  • Perform a genome-wide single variant analysis, and a burden analysis for the cumulative effect of rare variants on the WES and/or WGS datasets
  • Perform a genome-wide meta-analysis of the Roche WGS dataset, along with several WES/WGS datasets of external collaborators
  • Extract common and/or rare variants from selected targets to perform advanced data analysis to evaluate their causal link in AMD

Who You Are

You’re someone who wants to influence your own development, and are very passionate about genetics to better understand the biology of complex diseases. You’re willing to take the next step into a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies. While being part of a strong mentoring team of geneticists, biologists, and clinicians, you will be expected to independently guide key aspects of the project, and expand the analysis as you see necessary. Furthermore, for a short project like this one, you have a very specific skill set and self-reliance.

Moreover you are/have:

  • Enrolled in PhD or medical degree program at a university
  • Good knowledge about genetics of age-related macular degeneration
  • Skills on Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, especially for the genetic analysis of large datasets
  • Experience with common and rare-variant analysis tools (GWAS, Plink, R, SKAT, Burden test)
  • Good knowledge of the R statistical package, and of linux operating system and High-Performance Clusters (HPC)
  • English language fluency and good writing/communication skills

Apply now

Are you ready to apply? We want someone who thinks beyond the job offered - someone who knows that this position can be a rare springboard to many other opportunities at Roche. Roche embraces diversity and equal opportunity in a serious way. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be.

The internship starts at the beginning of March 2019, lasting for 8 months until the end of October 2019. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date and duration of internship on your motivation letter.

Applications need to include a CV and a cover letter, as well as a letter from your academic supervisor supporting your RiSE application, all merged into one PDF-File. Optional: Reference letters, transcripts…

Please note that non-EU/EFTA nationals have to successfully apply for a Swiss work permit themselves or provide us a certificate of mandatory internship form their university.
