Internship machine learning for detection of arc faults in residential electrical network 80-100%

ABB Corporate Research, in close collaboration with varied ABB business areas, is developing the foundations for the next generation of ABB products. We are currently looking for an intern to strengthen our sensing team in the area of arc fault detection. Electric arc faults may appear in faulty home installations and pose a significant safety hazard that may result in an outbreak of fire. Such events can be prevented using an arc fault detector device that interrupts the electrical circuit upon detecting an arcing event. Arc signature is however often difficult to distinguish from the signal generated by typical equipment supplied by network, e.g. powerline modem. Machine learning techniques can be used to improve the effectiveness and reliability of arc fault detector device. We are looking for you to explore the use of machine-learning in this context.

Tasks:

  • Develop a machine-learning algorithm to detect the occurrence of from end to end
  • Trim and organise dataset consisting of real and synthetic signals
  • Extract and select features
  • Choose and evaluate different classification algorithms
  • Test the final solution on real data
  • Document the findings (possibility of academic publication to be discussed)

Requirements:

  • Master or Bachelor studies in Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences or related field; official enrollment essential
  • Machine learning background or equivalent
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages - e.g. Python, Matlab
  • Basic understanding of electrical networks is welcomed but not required
  • Initiative, motivation and creativity
  • Fluency in English

Application Details:

  • Non-EU/EFTA citizens, please note that a certificate from your university, showing that an internship is a mandatory part of studies, is required for the visa application
