Roche Swiss Doctoral Fellowships in Drug Discovery and Biomarkers, Ophthalmology - Cell Biology and In Vivo (3 years’ duration)

The Neuroscience, Ophthalmology and Rare Diseases (NORD) Translational Area (DTA) of Roche Pharmaceutical Research & Early Development (pRED) has an opening for a Doctoral student (Ph.D.) within the Ophthalmology Discovery department located in Basel, Switzerland. This group of over 30 Roche scientists is focused on the clinical translation of therapeutic approaches for eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.

You are an exceptional and highly motivated Ph.D. candidate who will work full-time at the Roche laboratories in Basel as a part of the Ophthalmology team and will be enrolled in the academic institution and acquire an academic mentor. As a Roche Ph.D. fellow at Ophthalmology, you will be at the merger of fundamental and applied science in the discovery and translational area with active exposure to academia. You will be a part of a team of scientists, post-doctoral fellows, research associates, and master students.

In this role, you will

  • Develop and evaluate novel ocular drug delivery technologies within established tissue culture and animal models of ocular diseases to identify strategies with the highest potential for clinical translation.
  • Be part of biomarker discovery and validation in animal models and/or patients.
  • Participate in scientific diligence to evaluate opportunities for external innovation as well as present the laboratory’s scientific progress to internal stakeholders as well as the external academic and drug discovery community through presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications

  • We are looking for a self-driven student with recently obtained Master diploma in the field of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Vascular Biology, Immunology, or related fields.
  • Training in cell culture and established molecular biology and biochemistry techniques.
  • Experience working with small animal models of disease is essential (LTK1 preferred).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English are required.
