For this position, based in Basel, we are seeking a Trainee for our Patent Department. As a member of our patent group, you will support our team in securing patent protection, market exclusivity and freedom to operate aspects during the life cycle of Roche’s products in close collaboration with the members of all functions involved.
As a trainee patent attorney, you will form part of a team led by a senior qualified patent attorney, who will help you to learn the legal and practical skills required. The types of work include:
- Drafting patent applications for new inventions in close collaboration with Research & Development.
- Contributing to the process for worldwide patent filings, patent prosecution and abandonment of patent filings.
- Freedom to operate assessments, where we evaluate the scope of protection and strength of third party patent rights.
- Evaluating contract terms related to intellectual property aspects and coordinate with the Legal and Licensing departments on the drafting and negotiating of same.
As a development opportunity, it will be the initial step to develop as a European Patent Attorney.
Qualifications
You provide:
- A graduate or postgraduate qualification (preferably including PhD) in a scientific discipline, e.g. chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacy, medicine, medical/bio-engineering, physics or healthcare IT.
- Strong interest in patent law and the desire as well as stamina to train for a professional qualification as a European patent attorney.
- Excellent written and spoken English language skills, knowledge of additional languages will be an advantage.
- Very good communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work to tight deadlines and to handle several projects simultaneously
- A well-structured, reliable and precise style of work, strong business acumen.
