At Power Grids Research, the globally distributed research organization of Hitachi ABB Power Grids, we apply interdisciplinary knowledge to invent and design the power system of the future. In close collaboration with our business units, academia and customers, we aim to address societal challenges such as rising global energy demand, growing integration of renewable energy sources and climate change. We deliver innovations that ensure that electrical power is supplied reliably, efficiently and effectively. Our software group at Power Grids Research performs cutting edge research on digitalization for automation and power grid systems. We develop concepts and architectures that allow for a simplified deployment and integration of digital systems into power grid systems. Power Grids Research is looking for an intern to work on internet of things related projects. The intern will be involved in ongoing projects together with researchers from Power Grids Research. The internship will cover exciting topics in the areas of internet of things, microservices, containers, and scalable systems. The duration of the internship is six months long, but there is the possibility to extend it further.

Your responsibilities

  • Assist the researchers in evaluating different suitable architectures for existing systems, as well as proposing and implementing new microservice architectures
  • Be responsible for harvesting and modularizing existing code into microservices and prepare them to be used as containers
  • Use open source tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and internal platforms to configure and run the software on multiple devices
  • Run different experiments to assess the performance of the generated systems

Your background

  • Enrolled in a MSc degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Interest in internet of things, microservices, containers or scalable systems topics, or related topics
  • Be willing to use state of the art tools and different programming languages (C++, Java, Python, C) to complete the given tasks
  • Self-driven and curious, good organizational skills, work well in a team
  • Show flexibility and ability to prioritize and make use of the time as efficiently as possible
  • Selected candidates will be required to demonstrate their knowledge during the interview. Non-EU/EFTA citizens, please note that an official university certificate showing that an internship is a mandatory part of studies is required for the work permit application
