The position

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PS) is a global function within Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED). As a team member in the Bioinformatics and Exploratory Data Analysis group (BEDA), you will work in close collaboration with scientists in pRED, using state-of-the-art bioinformatics and biostatistics tools and methods. You will focus on exploratory research project focused on the integration of microbiome and human genetics data across different disease indications.

The Computational Metagenomics Lab of University of Trento, Italy is Roche’s academic partner for this Postdoctoral Fellowship. The partnership with academia will provide further insights on development of computational methods necessary to undertake the proposed project.

In this position you will:

  • Investigate whole genome data of different disease and healthy individuals
  • Derive and analyse microbiome data
  • Integrate metagenomics and human genomics data through the use of various computational methods
  • Apply combined analysis of genomic and microbiome data to better understand their interplay in the context of Parkinson’s disease, cancer and immune related disorders.

The RPF Programme has the ambition to build and maintain the Scientific Leadership of the future and to provide leading Roche scientists with the opportunity to collaborate with talented postdoctoral researchers and leading academic research groups from around the world. One of the key aims is to advance basic science and technologies that will be published in top-rated, peer-reviewed scientific journals, if necessary preceded by priority patent applications.

The duration of the RPF project is initially set for two years, with the possibility of extension for a third year. You will be based in Basel, Switzerland with possible exchange with our academic partner in Trento, Italy.

You are a computational biologist with a postgraduate scientific degree in the field of metagenomics and/or human genomics.

You also have experience and expertise in the following:

  • Python, R or at least one programming language
  • Statistics and/or machine learning
  • Working with bioinformatics tools and methods
  • Biology of neurological disorders and other disease indications of Roche interests (oncology and immunology)
  • Strong experience with metagenomics tools and microbiome data

You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.

You have been actively engaged in scientific research continuously (documented through publication co-authorships) and ready to start an RPF postdoctoral activity having obtained your PhD no later than 4 years ago.

When does it start?

The start date of this fellowship is Q2/Q3 2021, or on availability. In case of specific preferences, please indicate your preferred starting date in your motivation letter.
