Hitachi ABB Power Grids Research, in close collaboration with business areas, is developing foundations for the next generation of Power Grids products. Located in the proximity of Zurich, the research centre employs approximately 60 scientists from all over the world with cross-disciplinary expertise. In the Systems & Automation Group we perform cutting-edge research, and look at various aspects of making the power system stronger, smarter and greener. We focus on the challenges and opportunities in enhancing grid flexibility and facilitating renewable energy proliferation. In this context, we offer an internship position which provides the opportunity of working on real-world projects in an international team of research scientists.
Your responsibilities
- Model emerging technologies using commercial and open-source tools
- Develop and document software tools for techno-economic analysis in the context of long-term power system planning
- Apply state-of-the-art techniques for solving large-scale optimization problems under stimulating supervision
- Collaborate with experts in a multi-disciplinary research team
- Present and write reports on experiments
- Contribute to scientific publication
Your background
- Currently pursuing an M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering, applied mathematics or a similar subject - official enrolment is essential
- Background in one of the following topics: steady-state analysis and modelling of power grids or mathematical optimization and/or numerical and computational methods
- Profound knowledge of and experience in Python and/or Matlab
- Experience with using optimization solvers and/or optimization modelling languages (Pyomo, GAMS, Yalmip, AMPL) is a plus
- Experience with multi-energy modelling is a plus
- Written and oral proficiency in English
- Self-driven and curious with good organizational skills and team spirit
- Availability for six months, with the possibility of further extension
