Within Roche Pharma Research & Early Development (pRED) Pharmaceutical Sciences, the I2O (Immunology, Infectious Diseases, and Ophthalmology) Systems Biology group is seeking a highly motivated Master student, dedicated to the development and application of data science tools and systems biology approaches to deepen disease insights and drive target discovery. This internship offers the most talented students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience with us.

What do you need in your toolbox?

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate (less than a year) with a Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Systems Biology, Biomedicine, Bioengineering or comparable;
  • You are a creative problem solver, quick learner and comfortable in experimenting with new approaches.
  • You are a strong collaborator with willingness to initiate projects and contribute to the team goals;
  • You have good organizational skills;
  • You demonstrate high productivity and enjoy dealing with ambiguity and applying novel methodologies;
  • Strong coding experience: R (+ Shiny) and/or Python is a minimum requirement; experience with git and version control;
  • Confidence in quantitative statistics and data modelling; experience with statistical analysis of multi-dimensional data will be an advantage;
  • Experience with bulk and single-cell RNASeq data analysis;
  • Experience with lung/gastrointestinal biology, human immunology and genetics, microbiome and infectious diseases (virology, bacteriology) will be an advantage;
  • Practical understanding of any of the following: graph structures and graph search algorithms, machine learning and neural networks.
  • Experience with technologies required to undertake analyses on large data sources or with computationally intensive steps (SQL, parallelization, Hadoop, Spark, HPC cluster computing, Docker).
  • Strong communication skills in English (written and spoken), German is a plus.

The preferred start date of the internship is ideally September 2021 for 9 to 12 months. Shorter periods will not be considered. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date and duration of the internship on your motivation letter. Applications need to include a CV and a motivation letter both merged in one document.

Due to regulations non-EU/EFTA citizens must provide a certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory as part of the application documents.

Short-listed applicants will be expected to prepare a short presentation of their approach to a pre-defined biological data analytics problem.
