Internship for Students in biostatistics, statistical learning or data science (from July, 4 months)

At Roche, we believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives, and we are fearless in both making decisions and taking action. And we believe that good business means a better world.

That is why we come to work each day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.

The Roche Advanced Analytics Network (RAAN) is a network of Data Scientists across Roche Pharma and Dia, aiming at promoting and applying advanced analytics to power innovation at Roche. We issue internships every year in Data Science. In this internship you will be embedded in two major data science groups in Pharma Development, PD-personalized HealthCare (PHC) and PD-Data Sciences to develop and apply pioneering methods in clinical prediction model which is key in building future healthcare solutions and studies. In more details, the internship is to study the influence of distributional shifts (of predictors and dependent variables) on time-to-events prediction model performances There are two broad concepts potentially affecting the predictive performances of time-to-event models used for clinical prediction: 1) changes in the distribution of baseline features between different data sources, or “covariate shift”; and 2) “distribution drifts” in the outcomes of interest (follow-up times, censoring patterns, etc.).

In this project, we will explore how these two aspects impact models generalizability, by training and testing them on real world data (RWD), clinical trial data, and potentially also synthetic data simulated based on the real covariance structure and location parameters of clinical/RWD data. All these models will be predicting time-to-events, and include a restricted list of covariates known to be prognostic.

The main focus will be on assessing the uncertainty of optimal cutoff determination for patient selection in view of inclusion in future trial as patient selection criteria.

In this position, you will

  • Provide literature overview of distributional shifts influence onto clinical prediction (different outcome)
  • Construct and run data-driven simulations to study the effect of baseline predictors, outcome and censoring distributions on meaningful prediction performances indexes
  • Assess the outcome of simulations to the different set of data available
  • Develop set of codes/functions that can reproducibly be applied to similar context
  • Synthetize the outcome of the work in form of white paper, and or paper synopsis ready for publication

Who you are

Finished Master’s or PhD student in biostatistics, machine learning, data science or related fields.

Moreover, you are

  • Passionate about application of statistical learning approaches in biomedicine and scientifically rigorous
  • Someone with a strong statistical / machine learning background
  • Someone with biostatistics and/or epidemiology education
  • Proficient in R/Python

If you are proud of contributing and feel you have the dedication to teamwork and innovation that we are seeking, then Roche is the organization for you. Every role at Roche plays a part in making a difference to patients’ lives. If you want to work in a passionate team, make your mark & improve lives, apply now.

We are offering an internship position, preferably starting from July for 4 months. Please indicate your preferred start date and the desired duration of the internship on your motivation letter. Applications need to include a CV and a motivation letter both merged in one document.

Due to regulations non-EU/EFTA citizens must provide a certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory as part of the application documents.

Roche embraces diversity and equal opportunity in a serious way. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be.
