Postdoctoral Fellowship (RPF) in lung myeloid cell biology 2-3 years (M/W/D)

Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship (RPF) in lung myeloid cell biology (2-3 years)

The Immunology Incubator is an innovative interface between Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) and the next generation of academic leaders. High potential, early-mid career investigators and postdocs with an Immunology background are embedded within pRED to conduct exploratory research that advances disease understanding and uncovers novel therapeutic targets.

pRED has an opening for an Immunology Incubator Postdoc Fellow within the Immunology Department, part of the Immunology, Infections Diseases and Ophthalmology (I2O) located in Basel, Switzerland.

We are seeking an independent and highly motivated researcher for our Postdoc position to advance understanding of the mechanisms underlying the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Specifically, the research project will aim to investigate lung myeloid cell functional diversity and niche instruction by structural cells, primarily (but not only) in animal models of COPD.

In this position you will:

  • Carry out_ in vivo_ studies to further mechanistic understanding of lung inflammation

  • Implement high-throughput technologies, including single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to define the transcriptional signatures of myeloid and structural cell populations in the lung for further hypothesis generation
  • Perform detailed immune phenotyping of the cell (sub)populations of interest using multi-color flow and mass cytometry
  • Perform immunostainings on lung sections to define myeloid cell phenotype and localization
  • Carry out ex vivo studies in mouse and human to further mechanistic understanding
  • Form close collaborative relationships with other scientists within the Immunology Incubator and I2O department, and technical teams in other functions.

You have experience and expertise in the following:

You are someone who wants to influence your own development. You are looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions. Where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point.

  • You have obtained a Ph.D. no longer than four years ago in Cellular and Molecular Immunology

  • You have independently performed extensive hands on mechanistic studies using in vivo and ex vivo lung disease models

If you also bring many of the following skills and competencies, we are looking forward to receiving your application:

  • A profound understanding of the lung innate immune system and are eager to identify underlying mechanisms that will drive next-generation therapeutics
  • Extensive knowledge of immunohistochemistry and other tissue staining techniques
  • Extensive experience with multi-color flow cytometry
  • Experience in basic analysis of multi-omics data using R or Python is a plus
  • Publication(s) as a leading author in top-tier journals
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a strong team spirit, and like to work in international teams
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills

Are you ready to apply? We are looking for someone who thinks beyond the job offered - someone who knows that this position can be a rare springboard to many other opportunities at Roche. Please include a detailed CV with a publication list, and a cover letter describing your interests and your expected date of availability.

Roche embraces diversity and equal opportunity in a serious way. We are dedicated to building a team that represents a range of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be.
