Hitachi ABB Power Grids Surge Arresters are found in a fast-growing number of applications worldwide. In our R&D department in Wettingen, we are developing the next generation of surge protection technology and products for a stronger, safer and greener power grid. We are currently offering an outstanding student the chance to join our multidisciplinary team of researchers in the field of electrical engineering, design and testing. In the frame of a six-month internship foreseen to start in March 2021, you will be able to put theory into practice by contributing to one of our innovation projects.

Your responsibilities

  • Contribute to current research projects focusing on electrical designs and testing of surge arresters and their components
  • Develop and propose new designs starting from state of the art and knowledge of dielectric and field-grading materials
  • Prepare and run design calculations using standard and non-standard calculation tools
  • Contribute to develop appropriate test methods to validate the technical assumptions together with our HV lab
  • Contribute to manufacture prototypes construction
  • Evaluate and document findings and present test results to the team

Your background

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Strong knowledge in electrical engineering design and software tools (e.g. COMSOL, Solidworks and/or Sim Center ElecNet)
  • Previous experience in design and maintenance of electromechanical devices is a plus
  • Experience in laboratory work and know-how in experimental methods
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated mindset and ability to work independently
  • Highly conscientious individual with keen sense of responsibility
  • Fluent command of English, both written and spoken (German language is a plus)
