At Roche Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development Organization (pRED), we believe that rapid advances in science, technology, and Big Data are our greatest opportunity to rethink the way we address some of the world’s most challenging unmet health needs and have an even more profound impact on patients and society.

We are seeking an independent and highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join our multi-tissue systems engineering team. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to work at the Roche Institute for Translational Bioengineering (ITB; http://ritb.roche.com), a newly formed scientific group in pRED, whose goal is to disrupt the traditional drug discovery process through big and bold ideas, to ultimately develop more predictive human model systems.

The postdoctoral fellow will play a key role in ITB’s efforts to develop and apply next-generation human organoids. Using embryonic organoids as a model system, we will investigate how cells interact to form tissues and organs during development. This will include analysis of the molecular pathways/signals and mechano-chemical interactions that govern lineage decisions, pattern formation, and morphogenesis in organoids derived from pluripotent stem cells. You will have the opportunity to advance basic research via cutting-edge technologies in an industrial setting while maintaining an academic spirit. You will be embedded in a newly formed team of highly experienced researchers with diverse backgrounds ranging from biology and biotechnology to engineering and computational biology.

Your responsibilities are:

  • Design and execute in vitro experiments in the field of stem cell and organoid biology
  • Implement cutting-edge bioengineering approaches to enhance the pathophysiological relevance of organoid models
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to drive projects aimed at replicating the multi-cellular and architectural complexity of organoids
  • Generate high-quality results for peer-reviewed publications, write scientific papers and present at scientific meetings

Who you are

  • You are a scientist with a recent PhD in biology, biotechnology, bioengineering or a related field and have a deep understanding of stem cell and developmental biology.
  • You have a strong passion for science and are very curious. You are intellectually bold and adept at applying your skills to new areas to gain innovative and transformative insights.
  • Your experience and inquiring mindset allow you to work independently, design, conduct and interpret experiments, and apply new scientific methods.
  • You enjoy working in a team and are willing to collaborate with an international group of scientists from diverse background.

The position requires extensive expertise in:

  • State-of-the-art approaches in human pluripotent stem cell culture and organoid biology (ideally including hESCs and hiPSCs, 3D organoid culture and protocol development/optimization, organoid dissociation, multicolor FACS analysis), with an in-depth understanding of molecular biology methods
  • Immunofluorescence and other tissue staining techniques, advanced microscopy techniques (ideally including confocal and light sheet microscopy of 2D and 3D samples and tissue clearing)
  • High-quality publications as a leading author in top journals
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English

The following experiences are considered an asset:

  • Experience with viral vectors and CRISPR-based genome editing tools
  • Experience with single cell technologies
  • Experience in basic analysis of multi-omics and imaging data using R or Python
  • Experience with multiplexed imaging

To be considered, your application needs to include:

  • A cover letter, a CV (including a list of relevant publications) and the names and contacts of three references
