At Roche, we believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are fearless in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world.

That is why we come to work each day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigour, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.

As a valued unit of Roche, Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) contributes to the overall Roche Pharma mission of “Doing now what patients need next” by identifying targets, discovering new compounds, and advancing them through the pipeline.

Are you a future oriented, digitally savvy, leader, passionate about strategy and decision making? As a member of the Start Portfolio Strategy (SPOCK) program in Research and Early Development, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your abilities and potential through a 2 year rotation program. Throughout the program you will have a senior pRED leader that will mentor you and support your progress.

Portfolio & Program Management

You will spend the first year in the Portfolio & Program Management (PPM) team, part of the Strategy Portfolio & Clinical Operations Function (SP&CO) which maximizes Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) portfolio value by providing objective insights that guide quality decision making to maximize R&D productivity.

The PPM team provides a great overview of the key initiatives across all of pRED, so that you can find an assignment you are passionate about - whether in PPM, or beyond. Current SPOCK members have worked in diverse teams on strategic reviews of disease areas, on tools to better predict drug candidate success and on licensing opportunities for new digital therapeutics, to name a few.

You will work on analyses of the pRED portfolio, business options and navigate through a complex data ecosystem. You will interact with key functions and disease therapeutic area (DTA) teams, providing a portfolio perspective that drives quality decision making and supports strategic objectives.

Year One

During the first year you will be working closely with both cross-functional and PPM teams where you will have the opportunity to learn more about the pRED organisation and lead your own assignments. You will also be afforded the time and support to find your assignment for the second year which can be in any other part of the pRED organisation i.e. in a DTA (I2O, NRD, Oncology) or in one of the global functions; Pharmaceutical Sciences, Therapeutic Modalities or pRED Finance & Operations.

You will also be supported by your dedicated SPOCK program lead, PPM Head and have full access to key roles within PPM including the Data & Analytics Strategy lead and Capabilities & Development lead.

First year key responsibilities include

  • Hands-on involvement in the full data analysis process (from sourcing, cleaning and preparation, to analysis, model validation, insights and visualization). This includes communicating partial and final recommendations throughout projects.
  • Perform business analysis in support of strategic cross-portfolio projects and ensure alignment of cross-functional assumptions for a consolidated portfolio view, including the annual prioritization and business planning process.
  • Assist in acquiring, managing, and developing new data assets to support portfolio decision-making, and develop new and innovative analyses through the integration of various data sources.

You will need strong strategic, collaboration and communication skills, as well as an entrepreneurial mind-set.

Year Two

You will have the opportunity to make your mark on the part of the pRED organisation you have chosen through high visibility projects and senior level challenges. We expect pRED to benefit from your innovative mindset and your leadership development to have an impact through your second year stretch assignments. Examples could include:

  • Product owner: optimisation of lab services pRED
  • Insights lead: new Data & Analytics organisation

Who you are:

You have three years experience in the medical / pharmaceutical or scientific industries, are a life sciences or data sciences graduate with an advanced degree (MBA and/or PhD) desirable but not essential. You show a well-developed strategic and analytical mindset with a demonstrable ability to integrate and synthesize findings from multiple sources to enable informed strategic decision-making.

Excellent oral communication / presentation skills are needed. You can explain your ideas, are persuasive and can demonstrate new approaches to problems.

You have a “can do” customer service spirit, collaborative attitude and flexibility to compromise, you are proactive and solutions-oriented and have the ability to see the bigger picture.

An experience of influencing in a matrix organisation is a real asset for this role.

You also have the ability to develop special skills, are open to new ideas, demonstrate curiosity, and have a thoughtful understanding of how previous experiences have shaped your attitudes, beliefs and behaviour.
