Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in IBD Systems Biology, I2O DTA, pRED Urgent hiring

The Immunology Incubator is an innovative interface between Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) and the next generation of academic leaders. High potential, early-mid career investigators and postdocs with an Immunology background are embedded within pRED to conduct exploratory research that advances disease understanding and uncovers novel therapeutic targets.

We are now recruiting a Postdoctoral researcher within the Immunology Incubator program. Specifically, the postdoc will be embedded in the Systems Biology group, part of the Immunology, Infectious Diseases, and Ophthalmology (I2O) Department, located in Basel, Switzerland. The I2O Systems Biology group is an integral component of the I2O drug discovery and early development pipeline, supporting data integration and knowledge management, deepening disease understanding and proposing new drug targets and biomarkers based on systematic, unbiased, data-driven approaches.

We are seeking an independent and highly-motivated researcher to advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the progression of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Specifically the project will investigate host-microbial interfaces to develop a scalable and mechanistic understanding of IBD pathogenesis.

You will, moreover assimilate into a team of systems biologists and work this independent project in an academic collaboration, responding and adapting to results-oriented project goals in an agile manner.

Your major responsibilities in this position include the following:

  • Working independently on a dedicated project to deepen disease understanding in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Integration of orthogonal data resources including microbiome, metabolome and host single-cell data into an interactome
  • Develop standard pipelines that will allow to add new data to fine tune the interactome
  • Ensure excellent data management, standardized reporting, and alignment with FAIR data principles
  • Develop novel metrics that will define the strength of interaction between cells, metabolites and microbes
  • Continue the development of an R-Shiny dashboard that allows to explore the interactome
  • Work together with other data scientists to define key nodes and links in the interactome that are supported by literature
  • Liaise with key stakeholders and manage communications

In Addition, You Have The Following Qualifications And Experience

  • You hold a Ph.D. in a biomedical (e.g. Immunology, Microbiology, Medicine, Veterinary Sciences), computational (e.g. Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics) or interdisciplinary field (e.g. Systems Biology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Biostatistics) and you completed your Ph.D. no longer than four years ago

  • An understanding of gastrointestinal biology and insights into inflammatory bowel disease is a plus;
  • You have strong expertise in bioinformatics, systems biology or computational biology

  • You have a deep expertise in data science, exemplified by one or more of the following:
    • You have experience working with and integrating multiple orthogonal datasets
    • You have experience utilizing and developing algorithms for mining complex biomedical data, including statistics and machine learning
    • You have experience in developing tools for visualization and exploration of integrated datasets
  • You are able to translate biomedical questions into actionable analytical plans (algorithms, software etc.) and communicating them to technical experts
  • You have strong programming skills, preferably in R and/or Python;
  • You have an understanding of command line (bash) and have worked with high performance computing. Ability to build complex pipelines using workflow languages (snakemake, nextflow or CWL) is a plus
  • You are enthusiastic about learning new concepts and technologies and you easily show engagement with your peers and supervisors
  • You are fluent in English
