The Neuroscience and Rare Diseases Discovery and Translational Area (NRD DTA) is developing medicines for a range of serious neurological diseases, including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, autism, spinal muscular atrophy, and Huntington’s disease.
As RiSE student in the NRD DTA you will work collaboratively between the Lysosomal Biology group and Neuroimmunology labs, at the Roche Innovation Center Basel, Switzerland. The project aims to elucidate the mechanisms of lysosomal dysfunction in myeloid cells in the context of neurodegenerative disease. You will be working with human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), differentiate them into microglia, and assess the impact of the certain genetic variants on various cellular phenotypes. In addition, state of the art technologies to purify lysosomes will be employed to study lysosomal function with biochemical methods. You will be mentored by a Roche scientist, who will both supervise and collaborate with you on the project, and provide you with the needed work infrastructure and collaborative network across the neuroscience research community within Roche.
During the internship, your tasks will include:
- Culturing, differentiation, and characterization of isogenic iPSC lines with genetic variants into microglia/macrophages
- Performing functional assays to elucidate the impact of genetic variants on lysosomal function, phagocytosis, and lipid processing
- Applying pharmacological or genetic perturbations to probe cellular pathways associated with these phenotypes
- Performing lyso IPs to explore changes in lysosomal enzymes associated with microglial function
- Regularly presenting your findings in lab meetings and department seminars
- Contributing to a manuscript and external presentations that contain the results of this research
Who You Are

Moreover you are/have:
- Enrolled in a PhD or medical degree program at a university and are looking to expand your experience with an industry internship
- Proficient in maintaining and treating iPSC/ESC derived culture systems
- Background in cellular neurobiology, neuroimmunology, or other related subject
- Proven track record in cell culture, cellular assays, and biochemistry (dose response treatments, fluorescent or confocal microscopy, IPs / Western blot, etc.)
- Independent, proactive, and willing to work in a highly collaborative and dynamic research environment

The preferred start date of the internship is February 2022 or upon availability. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date of internship on your motivation letter.

Please note that due to regulations non-EU/EFTA citizens have to provide a certificate from the university stating that an industry internship is mandatory as part of the university training.
