PhD internship in the Microtechnologies Group at Roche Institute for Translational Bioengineering (ITB)

The PhD intern will work in the Microtechnologies Group at Roche Institute for Translational Bioengineering (ITB), a newly formed scientific group in pRED whose goal is to disrupt the traditional drug discovery process through innovation/big and bold ideas focused on improving our ability to use predictive human model systems. The intern will aid in developing a microfluidic devices to sort cells and organoids based on size using Deterministic Lateral Displacement (DLD). You will be hosted and mentored by the Microtechnologies group which will guide you through your research and provide you with the needed work infrastructure and collaborative network.

During the internship your tasks will include

  • Detailed background literature review of microfluidic devices to sort organoids based on size and morphology. Draft a manuscript for peer-reviewed publication.
  • Design the device based on Deterministic Lateral Displacement to sort particles from 10 um to 300 um or larger.
  • Simulate the performance of the device using COMSOL
  • Prototype microfluidic devices using soft-lithography
  • Test the microfluidic devices with organoids produced at ITB
  • Generate high-quality results for peer-reviewed publications and present at scientific meetings

Who you are

  • Enrolled in a PhD program at a university or research institution in the field of bioengineering, microsystems or microfluidics. You are looking to expand your experience with an industry internship (must still be enrolled at University for 50% of the duration of the stay at Roche)
  • Demonstrated experience fabricating microfluidic devices using soft lithography, multi-layer soft lithography, 3D printing and CNC micro milling
  • Demonstrated experience developing devices based on Deterministic Lateral Displacement
  • Experience with several software packages: CAD (Autocad or others), Matlab, and finite-element simulations (preferable COMSOL)
  • Experience manipulating mammalian cells or organoids.
  • Demonstrated experience writing manuscripts for scientific journals.
