The Rare Disease group is focused on discovery and development of novel therapeutics for genetically defined diseases with high unmet medical need. The group lies within the Neuroscience, Ophthalmology and Rare Disease (NORD) Disease Translation Area (DTA), part of the Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) organization.

The RiSE program (Roche Internships for Scientific Exchange) offers the most talented postgraduate students the opportunity to improve their competencies and to gain valuable work experience within our diverse environment. The position will be based in Basel, Switzerland.

In this position you will use patient derived stem cell lines to explore allele specific regulation of gene transcription by epigenetic factors. In particular, the goal of this task will be to establish changes in chromatin organization with pharmacological treatment aimed at enhancing gene expression. Using the results of this work, if time permits, you will investigate the translatability in samples collected from in vivo experiments.

During the internship your tasks will include:

  • Culturing patient derived neuronal stem cell lines, and maintaining cultures with longer duration differentiation protocols
  • Designing and conducting experiments to study pharmacological treatment effects in disease cell lines (i.e. establishing a treatment and sample collection schedule to assess changes over time)
  • Establishing assays to probe epigenetic reprogramming at specific loci (e.g. bisulfite sequencing, ICC) in response to treatment induced transcriptional activation.
  • Performing data analysis with functional support
  • Participate in group discussions and share lab workspace with a small team composed of 2 research associates
  • Reporting progress to a discovery project leader scientist who will also be your mentor and supervisor
  • Active problem solving and contribution to team discussion

Moreover, you are/have:

  • Enrolled in PhD or medical degree program at a university
  • A strong background in molecular cell biology with prior research experience in chromatin biology
  • Some experience in working with different cell culture systems, preferably according to BSL2 requirements
  • Excellent communication skills and good team spirit with the ability to tackle problems independently
  • High level of English speaking and writing skills
