Roche Postdoctoral Fellow (RPF), new research tools to study genotypes of Angelman Syndrome (Start September )

As a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Neuroscience and Rare Diseases (NRD DTA), you will focus on exploratory research project on molecular, functional and behavioral characterization of novel in-vitro and in-vivo disease models for Angelman Syndrome (AS).

The laboratory of Prof Ype Elgersma, Department of Clinical Genetics at the ERASMUS MC in Rotterdam is Roche’s academic partner for this Postdoctoral Fellowship. The laboratory is renowned for its ground-breaking work in the area of AS research and development. The position is built on a long-lasting successful collaboration with Roche and ERASMUS MC and will leverage on a unique combination of research & development tools developed at ERASMUS MC and within Roche.

In this position you will:

  • Establish and characterize novel in-vivo disease models for Angelman Syndrome (AS)
  • Characterize the different AS subtypes (chromosomal deletion, Ube3a mutations, maternal imprinting center deficits (mICD) and uniparental disomy (UPD)
  • Identify genetic contribution to AS disease severity beyond Ube3a to AS on a molecular & functional/behavioral level
  • Assess Ube3a & non-Ube3a targeting treatments (including co-treatment) to enable personalized treatment options for AS
  • Characterize downstream molecular and functional effects for the different AS subtypes to identify and characterize translatable treatment-response biomarkers

This position is sponsored by the Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme.

The RPF Programme has the ambition to build and maintain the Scientific Leadership of the future and to provide leading Roche scientists with the opportunity to collaborate with talented postdoctoral researchers, and leading academic research groups, from around the world. One of the key aims is to advance basic science and technologies that will be published in top-rated, peer-reviewed scientific journals if necessary preceded by priority patent applications. More information about the RPF Programme: https://www.roche.com/careers/workplaces/wp_research/the-roche-postdoctoral-fellowship-programme.htm

The duration of RPF project is initially set for two years, with the possibility of extension for a third year. You will work both at our academic partner in Rotterdam and in the Roche Innovation Center Basel

Who you are

As our perfect candidate, you are holding a PhD in the area of Neuroscience with a strong research background in molecular and cellular biology with a proven publication record and excellent communication skills. Postdoctoral experience, though not required, is a plus.

Also, you will have research experience in rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorders and experience with studying the role of the ubiquitin-proteasome system in neuronal physiology and pathophysiology. You also have experience and expertise in the following:

  • Actively perform and oversee in vitro and/or in vivo experiments (including required certificates) to test research hypotheses
  • Expertise in a wide range of molecular and cellular biology techniques, functional assay development, immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry
  • experience with unbiased and targeted proteomic profiling approaches including data analysis
  • track record of completing challenging technical problems independently and creatively
  • track record of initiating and leading cross-functional research projects and talent to identify synergies (“connecting the dots”)

The successful candidate is expected to be independent, hardworking, productive and flexible with a sense of urgency who enjoys working as part of an international team in a highly competitive neuroscience environment.

You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.

You have been actively engaged in scientific research continuously since his/her PhD (MD or MD/PhD) and ready to start an RPF postdoctoral activity no later than 4 years after PhD (MD or MD/PhD).

When does it start?

The start date of this fellowship is based on availability. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date on your motivation letter. All applications always need to include a CV, motivation letter, a publication list, and, if available, your PhD.
