At PwC, we offer many great opportunities to students and graduates. Two popular options are our Virtual Case Experiences, where you work virtually on simulated client projects, and our Internship Programme.
In February 2021, Stephan Ludwig solved our Virtual Case Experience in Financial Audit to get an insight into the world of auditing. After successfully completing the case and his Bachelor’s degree at the University of St. Gallen, he started his 9-month internship in Assurance (FS Audit) at PwC in Zurich.
In the following interview, Stephan talks about his journey of completing one of our Virtual Case Experiences and then starting an internship at PwC.
"I mainly decided to solve PwC’s Virtual Case Experience in Financial Audit due to my curiosity – I wanted to get a first-hand experience of what an auditor does at PwC."
Why did you decide to solve one of our Virtual Case Experiences? Has this case contributed to your personal success?
I mainly decided to solve PwC’s Virtual Case Experience in Financial Audit due to my curiosity – I wanted to get a first-hand experience of what an auditor does at PwC. I already knew great parts of what the job entailed, however, I did not know how the work was documented. The Virtual Case Experience gave me an introduction to this part of the job and provided me with an interesting view into the life of an auditor at PwC. Furthermore, it ultimately helped me in securing an internship at PwC.
Do you have any advice for students who would also like to complete one of our Virtual Case Experiences?
My advice is quite simple: don’t overthink and just try it out! You’ll learn so much if you take the time you have to work through the case. Even if you only have an hour a day, start solving the case and finish it another time. The Virtual Case Experiences are structured in such a way that you don’t have to finish them in one go. You work virtually on simulated client projects, from wherever you are and on your own time. Take the pressure off yourself and give it a go!
How did you react when you received an offer for an internship at PwC shortly afterwards? What are your professional plans?
I was thrilled and very happy that I received the opportunity to work for PwC. It was such a great process – my first impressions through the Virtual Case Experience confirmed me in wanting to become an auditor. Taking the next step in my career by getting an insight into the daily business of an auditor “in real life” as an intern at PwC is a huge opportunity. Now, I know more than ever that I’d really like to work as an auditor, which is why I am currently planning to do my Master’s degree at the University of St. Gallen and then return to PwC to become a certified public accountant.
What has been your greatest experience and your biggest learning at PwC so far? How did it shape your work?
The biggest experience for me was that at PwC everyone, from intern to partner, is sitting in the same boat and, therefore, teamwork is extremely important to steer that boat where you want it to go. Since our work depends on teamwork, the whole atmosphere was absolutely open and supportive from the beginning. Everyone was helpful at all times and I quickly learned the importance of simply asking questions and not being afraid to approach my team members. As a result, I made rapid progress, had a steep learning curve and was able to help my team even more.
