Position overview

Statistics & Decision Sciences (SDS) integrates broad and deep expertise across Janssen Research & Development in areas that range from Drug Discovery through Phases 2 and 3 clinical studies and post-market Medical Affairs and Real World Evidence. As part of Quantitative Sciences (QS) that comprises Statistics & Decision Sciences and Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics, we work in cross-disciplinary teams and apply quantitative principles across the R&D portfolio to enable optimal decision-making at the earliest time point and in the most efficient manner. Statistics & Decision Sciences staff reside in the following worldwide locations Raritan, NJ, Titusville, NJ, Spring House, PA, and La Jolla, CA in the USA; Beerse, Belgium, Leiden, The Netherlands, Allschwill, Switzerland, High Wycombe, United Kingdom in the Europe; Shanghai and Beijing, China, and Tokyo, Japan.

The Associate Director will be responsible to help fulfill strategic and operations planning and coordination within QS/SDS and liaise with partner functions within Global Development and J&J (e.g. Finance, Procurement, and IT). The position provides lead support of business and scientific functions to enable operational excellence in areas of financial & resource management, business performance & productivity, quality & compliance, supplier management, process improvement & program management for strategic initiatives, communications/knowledge management, and talent development. Strong collaboration skills across multiple functions and levels within SDS and Janssen R&D are required in order to accomplish departmental activities in local, virtual, and global environments.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

The Associate Director will be directly responsible and accountable for one or more of the clusters below and will be a functional backup/deputy for other areas.

  • Financial & Resource Management: Supports decision making and strategy alignment to R&D priorities through Business Review meetings. Assists with the development of SDS annual budget, update latest outlook, and track spending against forecast. Helps coordinate with Finance and Capacity Management to identify, analyze trends, and ensure accuracy of financial and resource data across multiple systems.

  • Business Performance and Productivity: Supports/leads the development and sustainability of operational metrics, reports, and dashboards aligned with functional needs to monitor the operational performance of SDS. Demonstrates adaptability to change and serves as a role model to drive departmental alignment with strategic changes. Supports short and long-term SDS organizational planning and strategy.

  • Quality and Compliance: Ensures time reporting, training compliance and inspection readiness metrics goals of SDS staff are maintained via monitoring, communications and reporting out on CAPAs and inspection readiness gaps. Coordinates updates to procedural documents and distribution of relevant regulatory updates.

  • Supplier Management: Assesses and coordinates external statistical support providers. Supports/leads cross-area coordination of external suppliers and execution of sourcing strategies for SDS. Provides guidance and oversight to suppliers and contractors on J&J and SDS processes and systems.

  • Process Improvement & Program Management: Coordinates the identification, prioritization, tracking, and reporting out of end-to-end internal or cross-functional improvement initiatives within SDS and partnering with other functions. Develops training and standards. Takes responsibility for the quality and timeliness of project/initiative deliverables, as assessed by stakeholders such as the SDS Leadership team and cross-functional leaders and peers.

  • Communications/Knowledge Management: Supports/leads communication plan for SDS. Ensures a complete suite of portals and SharePoint sites for SDS Communications. Manages and updates content on SDS and SBO SharePoint sites.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of Masters in a scientific discipline or in general management e.g. Statistics, Engineering, Operations Research, Business Administration, or similar field with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Practical knowledge of drug development process and proven performance in operations management, process improvement, and business analysis are required.
  • Sound financial acumen, strong program/project management skills are required. A PMP certification is preferred.
  • Experience coordinating with or managing suppliers and hands-on experience in managing communication and collaboration platforms are preferred.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Proficiency of office suites, database, data analysis tools e.g. Tableau or Spotfire, process mapping, and project management software are required.
  • Proven Data Analytics and Reporting Skills, and proficiency in a programming/scripting language (e.g. VBA, R, Python, SAS) is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary contexts and across teams. Effective partnership with stakeholders at all levels to drive results in a global matrix environment is required.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, maintain confidentially and discretion when coming across sensitive information is required. Must be flexible in working hours occasionally to effectively support global teams.
