The Position

This position is a cross-functional collaboration between Synthetic Molecules Pharmaceutical Research & Development, the Roche Institute of Translational Bioengineering (ITB), and pRED. We are hiring a postdoctoral fellow who will develop organoid-based models of intestinal permeation, with a focus on oral biopharmaceutics.

Understanding the permeation process across the intestinal membrane is key for successful development of new oral drug molecules and drug delivery systems. Standard intestinal in vitro permeability assays are too simplistic, often resulting in a poor correlation with in vivo permeability, especially for new modalities or compounds bRo5. As a promising alternative approach, advanced human model systems (HMS), based on primary epithelial cells (including intestinal organoids), are expected to provide a more physiological environment for permeability assessment of oral molecules. The postdoc will play a major role in the development of the intestinal HMS and its evaluation in the context of drug transport and biopharmaceutics studies.

The fellow will:

  • Collaborate with scientist in ITB, ADME, PMDA (Predictive Modelling and Data Analysis) and biopharmaceutics to develop an intestinal HMS as advanced in vitro permeability model
  • Extensively characterize the properties of the new in vitro assay (microscopic properties, transcriptomic profiling)
  • Verify the ability of the new in vitro HMS to anticipate the permeation properties of oral compounds using a large set of molecules with reference in vivo data.
  • Disseminate the results in the internal and external scientific community via poster and oral presentations as well as peer-reviewed publications.

Your profile:

  • You hold a PhD in cell biology, bioengineering or related disciplines.
  • Expertise in 3D culture and advanced tissue models (e.g., organoids, spheroids, organs-on-chips) is required.
  • Deep knowledge of bio-analytical methods for cell characterization, staining and imaging techniques (e.g., confocal laser scanning microscopy), and LC-MS/MS analysis
  • Understanding of the biology of the intestine would be considered an asset
  • You are committed to working in an interdisciplinary project with a large team
  • Excellent English skills (written and spoken) and commitment to publishing scientific articles.

To be considered, your application needs:

  • A cover letter and a CV (including a list of relevant publications).
