Chemistry Student Internship: Library Synthesis & Workflow Development (as of April 2026 for 6 months in Basel, Switzerland) Neu
At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.
The Position
We are offering a 6 month internship focused on the intersection of Solid-Supported Reaction Development and High Throughput Chemistry, offering a unique opportunity to gain experience within both our Parallel Synthesis team in Medicinal Chemistry (MC) and the DNA Encoded Library Technology (DELT) team. This is an ideal opportunity for a student (or gap-year student) to gain hands-on experience in platform development, automation, and state-of-the-art organic synthesis within a top-tier pharmaceutical environment.
The Parallel synthesis and DELT teams are part of Small Molecule Research (SMR) within Therapeutic Modalities (TMo), where we are responsible for delivering high-quality chemical starting points for Roche’s early pipeline. By joining this cross-functional initiative, you will contribute to generating molecular insights that are critical for the advancement of discovery projects across various therapeutic areas.
The Opportunity
- Actively contribute to the development of novel solid-supported reaction protocols and library synthesis workflows.
- Work at the interface of Medicinal Chemistry and Lead Discovery.
- Help to design and implement automated workflows for parallel synthesis and library generation.
- Plan and perform multi-step organic syntheses, including the optimization of reaction conditions on solid support.
- Characterize and purify small molecule conjugates and libraries using techniques such as LC-MS, HPLC, and Mass Spectrometry.
- Use electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN) to accurately document research results and present findings to cross-functional teams.
- Gain an understanding of the drug discovery process, from hit identification to lead optimization.
Who You are:
- You are currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Chemistry, or you have graduated from a Master’s program in Chemistry within 12 months prior to the start date.
- You thrive in a multicultural environment and enjoy the challenge of working across different disciplinary boundaries.
- You have strong theoretical and practical knowledge of organic chemistry; previous experience with solid-phase synthesis, high-throughput methods or automation is a significant plus.
- You are proactive, and have a “can-do” attitude with a focus on problem-solving and process optimization and you have a keen interest in the technical side of laboratory research—specifically how automation and workflow design can accelerate science.
- You have excellent organizational skills, the ability to multitask in a dynamic lab setting, and fluency in English.
- You are ambitious and collaborative, you enjoy sharing insights and working toward a common goal with colleagues from different departments.
