The Commercial Insurance actuarial team forms a key part of the CI central underwriting team whose role is to lead the global business by bringing insights, improving business performance, sharing ideas, tools, and practices across geographies.

To achieve these goals, the actuarial team provides the quantitative elements, assisting underwriters in understanding business drivers and improving the quality of pricing.

We are augmenting traditional pricing/actuarial methodologies with contemporaneous analytical data techniques. A key focus of our analytics work is to take predictive techniques typically used in large retail portfolios into more specialized and smaller areas including statistical inference in sparse data sets.

We are looking for a new team member for Zurich based team.

Your Role

As the actuarial leader of the Underwriting Performance team, you will be the lead actuarial resource with regards to monitoring, understanding and communicating CI underwriting performance and actions. Work will involve:

  • Regular performance reviews - working with finance and reserving to establish recent performance and identify outlying trends. Turning observations into business insights.
  • Leading the central CI underwriting engagement in the annual planning process. Including assessments of achievability and advice to senior management
  • Leading investigations into specific performance issues including with actuarial and underwriting
  • Working with and coordinating many stakeholders - functions, countries, Lines of Business in understanding and managing global underwriting performance

Your Skills and Experience

As a Head of Underwriting Performance your skills and qualifications will ideally include:

  • Degree in a quantitative area such as actuarial, mathematics, engineering
  • 7+ years experience working in a general insurance actuarial team (reserving experience is very beneficial)
  • Ability to build your analytical skills both through on the job experience as well as through other sources e.g. actuarial qualifications
  • A strong interest in commercially applying your skills
  • Ability to interact successfully with people widely across the organization
