At Roche, 80,000 people across 150 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare. We believe in the urgency of delivering medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are fearless in both decision-making and taking action. We believe that good business means a better world. That is why we come to work every single day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.

In the Ophthalmology group, we are developing cutting edge therapies to prevent blindness. As a member of Ophthalmology team, you will be part of a truly international group that includes scientists and clinicians that are developing ophthalmic medicines for the future.

The position

As a Roche Postdoctoral Fellow (RPF) in the Ophthalmology Department (I2O), you will focus on exploratory research project on interrogating retinal degeneration and neuroprotection. You will be working with a group of scientists, PhD students and Postdocs in the Ophthalmology Discovery Department within Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) in Basel, Switzerland.

Stanford University is Roche’s academic partner for this Postdoctoral Fellowship. The partnership with academia will provide further insights and expertise on the role of neuronal activity in retinal diseases.

In this position, you will:

  • Work to characterize and develop new platforms to study neurodegeneration
  • Present your findings internally on a regular basis, at scientific meetings, and aim for work to be publishable in high impact journals
  • Be part of an exciting community of Roche scientists, fellow postdocs, and PhD students and have access to world-class resources for exploratory research
  • Get exposure to industry research, and build your network of industry and academic leaders in the field

This position is sponsored by the Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The RPF Program has the ambition to build and maintain the Scientific Leadership of the future and to provide leading Roche scientists with the opportunity to collaborate with talented postdoctoral researchers, and leading academic research groups, from around the world. One of the key aims is to advance basic science and technologies that will be published in top-rated, peer-reviewed scientific journals, if necessary preceded by priority patent applications.

The duration of RPF project is initially set for two years, with the possibility of extension for a third year and will be based in Basel, Switzerland.

You are a biologist (Molecular biology/neuroscience) with a postgraduate scientific degree in the field of vision research and/or neuroscience.

You also have experience and expertise in the following:

  • Completed a PhD (preferably in Ophthalmology or neurosciences) and experience performing in vitro and in vivo experiments.
  • Knowledge of retinal or neurodegenerative diseases and mechanisms of disease.
  • Animal handling (experience with ophthalmic models of disease is strongly preferred).
  • A can-do, positive mindset with creative ways to resolve topics.
  • Good English language competency.

You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.

You have been actively engaged in scientific research continuously since your PhD (MD or MD/PhD) and ready to start an RPF postdoctoral activity no later than 3 years after finishing your PhD (MD or MD/PhD).

When does it start?
The start date of this fellowship is for July/September 2020, or based on availability. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date on your motivation letter.
All applications always need to include a CV, motivation letter explaining how your previous work and experience makes you an ideal candidate for this position and a list of your publication.
