Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship (RPF) in immunoepigenomics of tumor microenvironments

At Roche, we believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are fearless in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world.

That is why we come to work every single day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigour, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.

Roche’s Innovation Center in Zürich develops novel cancer immunotherapies, and data scientists in our research organization pursue various computational analyses to support early stage drug projects and identify novel therapeutic opportunities.

The position

The Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship (RPF) Programme has the ambition to build and maintain the Scientific Leadership of the future and to provide leading Roche scientists with the opportunity to collaborate with talented postdoctoral researchers, and leading academic research groups, from around the world. One of the key aims is to advance basic science and technologies that will be published in top-rated, peer-reviewed scientific journals, if necessary preceded by priority patent applications.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Pharmaceutical Research & Early Development Informatics, you will focus on characterizing genome-wide DNA accessibility of various cell types within solid tumor microenvironments, comprising cancer cells and infiltrating immune cells. You will be responsible for leading an independent project that aligns with the goals of the cancer immunotherapy research and development organization as well as the advanced analytics network of our data scientists.

The duration of the RPF project is initially set for two years, with the possibility of extension for a third year. You will be based in Roche Innovation Center Zürich with stays at our academic partner in Helmholz Zentrum München. The partnership with Academia will provide further insights on advanced analysis of single-cell ATAC-seq data and epigenomics.

In this position you will:

  • make use of published single-cell ATAC-seq libraries to develop advanced analytics methods for identifying cell types based on their accessibility profiles
  • pursue complementary analyses of public and/or in-house ATAC-seq and RNA-seq data sets to detect novel biomarkers and targets for the benefit of cancer immunotherapy drug projects
  • apply the newly generated methodology to relevant datasets for our clinical and pre-clinical studies

Who you are:

You are a motivated applicant with a postgraduate scientific degree in the field of computational epigenomics, medical genomics, or related field, and interested in developing your advanced analytics skills. Candidates who have worked on biomedical machine learning are particularly encouraged to apply.

Furthermore, you have experience and expertise in the following:

  • We expect you to integrate with a dynamic environment of specialists in biomarker development, computational epigenetics, research informatics and machine learning.
  • You should have some experience in computational genomics/epigenetics (e.g. analysis of expression profiling, single cell transcriptomics, ATAC-seq) and bioinformatics.
  • Preferably, you should also have some prior exposure to immunology, oncology and machine learning methodologies.
  • A demonstrated use of at least one of the following programming languages is critical for this position: R, Python. Interest and experience in data management and engineering solutions is desirable.
  • You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate.
  • Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.
  • You have been actively engaged in scientific research continuously since your PhD and are ready to start an RPF postdoctoral activity no later than 5 years after your PhD.

If you are proud of contributing and feel you have the dedication to teamwork and innovation that we are seeking, then Roche is the organization for you. Every role at Roche plays a part in making a difference to patients’ lives. If you want to work in a hardworking team, make your mark & improve lives, apply now!

When does it start?

The start date of this fellowship is the 1st of September 2020, or on availability. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date on your motivation letter.

Applications should include a CV, a motivation letter, a publication list, and, if available, your PhD certificate.
