Job Description
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organisation working to save lives, protect rights and build a better future for refugees, internally displaced communities and stateless people. They work to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find refuge from violence, persecution, war or disaster at home. UNHCR also works to end statelessness for millions of people worldwide without a nationality.
The Communication with Communities (CwC) unit within UNHCR Lebanon works to ensure timely, accurate, and accessible two-way communication with refugees and displaced communities, in line with Accountability to Affected People (AAP) principles. Through various media channels (e.g., HELP website, Call Center, WhatsApp, SMS, printed materials), the unit provides information, gathers community feedback, and adapts programming accordingly. Amid ongoing crises in Lebanon and Syria, the CwC unit plays a vital role in keeping refugees informed about available services and support.
As Associate Protection Officer you support the Protection Unit by providing the following:
- Develop and coordinate communication materials on UNHCR services, ensuring inclusion of protection and Age, Gender and Diversity principles
- Draft and disseminate timely messaging on key topics, including sensitive issues like fraud prevention and voluntary return
- Improve data systems and tools to strengthen analysis of refugee feedback
- Promote innovative, accessible communication methods, focusing on inclusion and removing information barriers
- Work with partners to address communication challenges across diverse age, gender, and identity groups, supporting broader protection strategies

Skills required
For the Swiss JPO programme:
- Swiss nationality
- Not older than 32 years at the date of the first round of interviews
- Fluency in English and a second UN language
- Master's degree
- Strong interest in a longer-term career with the United Nations
For this position
- Master's degree in law or social sciences with experience/expertise in international law, and/or refugee law and other relevant studies.
- 3 years of professional experience in law, social sciences, political sciences, communications, information management, and with written and visual information/communication provision or another related area required. UNHCR considers work experience gained after the completion of the first university degree. Internships and unpaid volunteer work are counted at 50%, if they are relevant to the position.
- Professional experience in refugee protection, internal displacement, human rights or international humanitarian law
- Good knowledge of International Refugee and Human Rights Law and ability to apply the relevant legal principles
- Excellent communication skills
