Internship in Materials Science

The ABB Research organisation is developing the foundations for the next generation of ABB products. The ABB Swiss research center is located in the proximity of Zurich. The Materials team at ABB’s research center focuses on the development and manufacturing of innovative materials to be implemented in the company’s next generation of products. We are currently offering outstanding students the chance to join our multidisciplinary team of researchers in the field of metallic and composite materials. In the frame of a six-month internship scheduled to start in March 2020, you will be able to contribute to future energy technologies in one of our projects ranging from electrical contact materials to additive manufacturing.

Your responsibilities

• Contribute to current research projects focusing on innovative metal-based materials and manufacturing processes
• Develop and optimize material manufacturing processes on the lab-scale
• Analyze the produced materials or engineering prototypes with various characterization techniques to obtain a good understanding of the relationship between process parameters, microstructure, and material characteristics
• Evaluate and document findings and present test results to the team

Your background

• Currently pursuing a degree in Materials Science or a related discipline (completion of at least six semesters); official enrollment is essential
• Broad understanding of metallic and composite materials
• Basic knowledge in powder technology or engineering design and software tools (CAD etc.) is of advantage
• Experience in laboratory work and know-how in experimental methods
• Enthusiastic, self-motivated mindset and ability to work independently
• Highly conscientious individual with keen sense of responsibility
• Fluent command of English
