Starting a career often means new paths, new roles, and new questions. What you often don't learn during your studies are the hidden doors that aren't listed in the course catalog—but that's exactly where many opportunities arise. One of these doors is alumni networks.
At first glance, they may seem distant: people who have long since started their careers, old names, old photos. But if you look closely, you will find knowledge, contacts – and often the help you need to take the next step.
Knowledge you can't Google
Alumni have already traveled the path you are currently on. They know how job interviews work, what really matters in a job, and what is important during the first week. And they will tell you things that you won't find on any career portal.
Take advantage of this experience. Many alumni are happy to share their knowledge because they know how difficult it can be to get started. Ask questions, listen, and learn.
Contacts that will help you get ahead
Good contacts are no substitute for skills – but they can raise your profile. Alumni networks give you access to people who work in companies that interest you. You can network, introduce yourself, and strike up conversations at events.
And best of all, your shared background – same university, same field of study – creates a bond. You're not just anyone. You're someone from “back then.” And that often counts for more than you think.
Opportunities that others don't see
Many alumni associations organize events, mentoring programs, or share job offers that you would never otherwise see. If you become a member, you will often receive information earlier—and directly from people who are working in the field.
Often, just a few conversations are enough to open doors. Maybe you'll get an internship, maybe a tip for a job. Maybe just an honest insight into an industry. Everything helps.
Don't remain anonymous
Many people leave university thinking, “Now real life begins,” and forget that they remain part of a community. If you connect with your network early on, you stay visible – and can give back when you're further along.
Alumni work is not a one-way street. It's not just about taking. It's about connecting. It's about passing on what you've learned. And it's about remaining part of something bigger, even after your studies are over.
Many networks have their own platforms
What many people don't know is that almost every university has its own alumni website. There you can find events, job tips, and contacts.
Check out the website of your former university and sign up. It only takes five minutes and can save you weeks of searching later on.

Alumni networks are not formal structures—they thrive on people like you. On those who show up, get involved, and contribute their ideas. Starting your career is easier when you don't go it alone.
And sometimes all it takes is a conversation, an email, or an event to turn a connection into a real opportunity.
