A part-time job is often more than just money. It can help you gain experience, make contacts and structure your everyday life. But not every job will help you get ahead. Some cost more energy than they bring you joy. Others don't fit in with your study routine. And still others look good on paper but leave you feeling drained. That's why it's worth taking a closer look. Here are a few thoughts to help you find a part-time job that not only pays the rent but also suits you.

Be clear about what you need

Before you start looking, ask yourself: What do you really need? Is it just about money? Or do you also want to learn something? Do you want to meet people? Or would you prefer something quiet where you can think on your own? Also important: How much time do you have without it affecting your studies? And when can you work – early, late, at weekends? The clearer you are about what you need, the more targeted your search for the right job will be.

Your studies should be proactive

A good part-time job takes your studies into account – and sometimes it even fits in with your field of study. Perhaps you can work in a field that is related to your area of study. This could give you some initial insights into your future career. But even if the job is not directly related to your studies, it is important that it does not slow you down. Timetables, exam periods and deadlines must be taken into account, and you should be open about this when looking for a job.

Where can I find a part-time job?

You won't find many good part-time jobs on the major job portals. Check the notice boards and internal forums at your university. There are often positions that are specifically intended for students. Alumni associations, student councils and departments also advertise jobs. Be proactive and talk to people. Sometimes a conversation can get you further than fifty applications.

Of course, you will find many part-time jobs specifically tailored to students on our job platform talendo.ch – be sure to take a look!

And by the way: We at talendo are always looking for motivated Campus Scouts. If you would like to use your network and work from your university, take a look at the job description. Would that be something for you?

Say what you can – even if you don't have much experience yet

Perhaps you don't have a long CV yet. That's okay. You can still show what you have to offer: reliability, diligence, openness, willingness to learn. It's important to be honest – but not too reserved. Write clearly about what you can do. And even more importantly, say what you want. Many employers aren't looking for the perfect CV, but for someone who is motivated and wants to get involved.

Tools to help you get started

If you're finding it difficult to get your bearings or put your documents together, use tools such as Career Starter or CV Creator from talendo. They will guide you step by step – especially if you're just starting out. A clear CV and a short, honest cover letter often make all the difference – even for part-time jobs.

So remember: a part-time job shouldn't hold you back. It should empower you. It should show you that you can do more than you might think. And if it's a good fit for you, it will help you not only today, but also tomorrow. Stay open-minded. Be honest and don't just look for a job – look for a role that is good for you, empowers you and fits your path. Good luck!
