What comes to mind when you hear the word “consulting”? Endless slide decks? Late nights at the office? In reality, the job is much more diverse – and exciting.
Consulting is a dynamic industry and client work can be demanding – so yes, the job can require a certain amount of flexibility and adabtability. Consulting means variety, teamwork, and learning every single day. It’s about helping clients solve their biggest challenges while growing yourself in the process. To show you what that really looks like, we asked Laura, Senior Consultant in our Technology & Transformation team, to share a peek into her week.
Let’s dive into the behind-the-scenes!
Hi there! I’m Laura, a Senior Consultant in the Sales and Service team, part of the Technology & Transformation business line, and I’m based in Zurich. I joined the team back in October 2022, and what a journey it has been!
Currently, I’m working as a senior business analyst on a banking project in Liechtenstein, where we’re implementing Salesforce Financial Services Cloud to help the client modernize their CRM capabilities. But consulting is never just about client work — Beyond client engagements, I am also invested in internal initiatives that fortify the practice, foster thought leadership, develop cutting-edge methodologies, and create a culture of collaboration and growth.
Monday: Kick-off & collaboration
08:30 – I start the week with an internal project meeting alongside our project manager and developers. We align on priorities, surface any blockers, and map out dependencies.
10:00 – Time to switch gears – I lead a requirement session with the client on a new feature: event and campaign management. We brainstorm, shape their needs into user stories, and I start preparing the mock-ups to visualize the concept for both business and tech stakeholders.
12:00 – If I’m at the office, lunch is a perfect time to reconnect with colleagues from other projects. It’s always refreshing to hear what they’re working on and exchange tips.
14:00 – Our functional team sync is next. As a functional consultant, I bridge business needs with technical teams — so we discuss items like solution design, user journeys, and data requirements.
16:00 – I join an internal call for our Salesforce Demo Pitch Camp, an internal initiative helping colleagues practice value-based selling. It’s a fun way to build confidence and sharpen one’s presentation skills in a safe space.
Tuesday: Onsite in Liechtenstein
07:00 – It’s an early start — client days mean travelling to Liechtenstein, usually with a coffee in hand and deliverables reviewed on the train.
10:00 – I join an onsite workshop with the client’s business risk team to review our proposed data migration concept. For data-sensitive sectors like banking, this step is critical — accuracy, compliance, and data integrity are non-negotiable.
12:00 – We head out for lunch with the client team. These informal chats are a great way to build rapport and deepen collaboration.
14:00 – The afternoon is filled with refinement sessions across departments. I speak to Private Banking about user interface enhancement needs and meet with the client’s marketing team to finalize a consent management process using their new Salesforce Marketing Cloud and preference centre solution.
17:30 – We end with an internal check-in summarizing what was achieved today, and clarifying who needs support tomorrow.
Wednesday: Refinement & testing
09:00 – We present the refined business requirements to a broader group of stakeholders. These sessions are vital — we gather feedback, align departments, and flag potential cross-functional impacts early on.
13:00 – After lunch, I meet with our Quality Assurance team to refine test cases. We review edge cases, user roles, and confirm which features require regression testing – ensuring new changes don’t affect existing functionalities.
15:00 – A joint session with the entire project team follows. With multiple workstreams in parallel, coordination is critical to keeping everything aligned.
17:00 – We say goodbye to the client and head back to Zurich, usually tired but satisfied after two full days onsite.
Thursday: Zurich Office & Strategy
09:00 – Back in the Zurich office, I start the day catching up on internal tasks and reviewing notes from our client visit.
13:30 – I join a design thinking session with our internal team to brainstorm how we can better support clients during the early scoping phase of Salesforce projects. We map pain points, ideate improvements, and share experiences from recent engagements – it’s always energizing to zoom out and think creatively.
15:30 – I wrap up some admin work, tidy up my inbox, and respond to a few open Jira tickets to keep everything up to date for the developers.
18:00 – After work, I meet a few colleagues for our monthly apéro at our favourite spot near the office. These hangouts are the perfect way to unwind, share laughs, and connect outside the project hustle.
Friday: Knowledge sharing & wrapping up
08:15 – Fridays usually start with our internal Salesforce Academy. These weekly sessions are a goldmine — we share project learnings, Salesforce news, and tips on navigating new clouds or features.
11:00 – Next up is sprint planning for our Salesforce project. This is where the team aligns on which user stories will be delivered in the upcoming sprint. As a business analyst, I present the stories that are ready, walk through the acceptance criteria, clarify any remaining questions from the developers, and make sure the scope is realistic. The goal is to ensure everyone is aligned and confident about what we are committing to.
13:00 – I meet with my Deloitte Career Coach for a monthly check-in. We review my growth and talk about development opportunities. These sessions are a big part of what makes Deloitte’s career coaching culture so strong.
16:00 – My final call of the week is with our Delivery@Scale initiative team. It’s an internal Deloitte initiative that aims to support consultant in their day-to-day job, by boosting their productivity and elevating their project quality.
17:30 – The week is over! Time to disconnect, hop on my bike, and hit the trails. Nothing beats a ride through Swiss nature to clear your head and recharge for the next challenge.
Thanks for following along!
